Why to be afraid from fairies?
Not every fairy is a sexual object. Not every fairy flies around in babydoll or very short skirts or underwear... it is not always a Halloween party or an overheated event...
Who are the fairies?
Why are people afraid from them?
In H.C. Andersen's fairy tales, the fairies sometimes had extra tasks, like teachers nowadays. They were not so much graceful with open-minded kids. That is also one of the reasons that H.C. Andersen's fairy tales are not fully told. As some stories are very hard, and do not match nowadays liberal values.
From one of my previous posts: Eniovden, Kupala Night, the flower magic, we know that people were afraid of fairies in Bulgaria, which is why they collected a lot of different herbs.
But actually, in regular folklore, fairies love herbs and flowers... So maybe in Bulgaria, they did not know this, and they attract a lot of fairies every year...
"Fairies are usually conceived as being characteristically beautiful or handsome and as having lives corresponding to those of human beings, though longer. ...
Fairy lore is particularly prevalent in Ireland, Cornwall, Wales, and Scotland."
