Majowka , 1st of May in Poland

When I was pregnant with my first son in Denmark in 2017. I met another mother. She was also pregnant. Her husband also worked at the KU LAW faculty that time.

She was originally from Poland, but grew up in the Netherlands. As her mother got divorced and moved to the Netherlands with her two daughters. Her mother was a Psychologist.

The pregnant woman, herself had PhD from London in Art. And lived in Copenhagen with her husband.

I was excited to participate one of her workshop in Island Brygge. She was about drawing pictures together with others. That was the workshop to process information and life challenges by creating some kind of drawing together with several people.

So we arrived to the Polish holidays and customs... she was mentioning Christmas and how the New Year is celebrated in Denmark.

Then I mentioned one of the funnest holiday that I participated in Poland: Majowka.

She never heard about it. It was super embarrassing, as several Polish people were at the event, who just moved to Denmark 1-2 years ago before.

Now I will share several photos about the Majowka, that I participated in 2013.

And then I will give an explanation about the holiday.

"In Poland, May 1st (Majówką) is International Labour Day, a public holiday dedicated to workers and their rights, which is widely celebrated as part of a long holiday weekend. During this time, most businesses are closed, and people often enjoy the start of the warmer weather by spending time outdoors with family and friends, picnicking, barbecuing, and traveling to the countryside or lakes. It is the first day of the broader Majówka period, which also includes Flag Day on May 2nd and Constitution Day on May 3rd. "- Source: AI answer from Google
